CASE
For my thesis project, the only requirement was that it had to represent “something you desire.” My greatest desire—one that I’ve had since my teenage years—is to visit Japan. I’ve always been deeply fascinated by its culture, yet I haven’t had the opportunity to travel there.
To capture the two cultural sides of Japan that intrigue me, I designed and built a Torii gate, a traditional element of the Japanese Shinto religion.
Suspended within the gate are two banners that together form the red sun of the Japanese flag. The left banner represents Japan’s rich historical and traditional heritage, while the right banner reflects its modern, cutting-edge culture.
I named the piece Nihon, the Japanese name for Japan, as a tribute to my admiration for the country and its contrasts.
